Forces in 1-D
October 1st, 2009
Today we started our new unit of Forces in 1-D. We picked up a new calendar,

Next Mr. Rylander explained the Lab, and we were sent back to work.
The three stations in the lab were
  • Station A was an air puck table, where the object was to push the puck, and then observe what it did. more information can be found in the PDF.
  • Station B was a fan car station, where we graphed the motion of a car with a fan pushing it away from the motion sensor, and found what tipe of motion that was.
  • Station C was the trickiest, where we took ideas from last unit and combined them with new thoughts.
After that we needed to write out the big idea questions and answers they were :
AIR PUCK - BIG QUESTION 1: What type of motion occurs while NO FORCE acts on an object?
FAN CART - BIG QUESTION 2: What type of motion occurs while A CONSTANT FORCE acts on an object?
STRINGS & SPRING SCALES - BIG QUESTION 3: How do forces on objects that are connected compare?

Finally Mr. Rylander handed back Tests and grade printouts.


October 2nd, 2009


Today we started class with a QOD. The QOD asked us to determine which graph corresponded with the example given on top. This involved a stick figure pushing a box in a constant speed on a frictionless surface. After the class turned in all the QOD. Mr. Rylander explained that the graph which corresponded with the example was the 3rd one. Which had a positive acceleration, due to the frictionless surface. The Box gained speed every second.

After the QOD, Mr. Rylander handed out the motion detector & the nifty fan cart lab. Not everyone finished the Investigating Forces Lab, so some groups finished collecting their data and answering questions for that lab before beginning the Motion Detector and Nifty Fan Cart Lab. The goal for this lab is to find out how force and mass affect the acceleration of a cart. The mass of the fan cart will always be the same, but we used different forces by putting 2,3, or 4 batteries in the fan cart. We had a velocity v. time graph for the fan cart with 4 batteries, then 3 batteries, and finally 2 batteries. The homework for this lab is to create your own experiment to investigate how mass effects the acceleration of an object. Then, write a reflection/conclusion paragraph. This lab is due Tuesday. The reflection/conclusion for the Investigating Forces Lab is due Monday and there is a Webassign due Friday.


Monday October 5, 2009 Today, we started off class with a QOD. The question asked us how acceleration and force were related and there were 3 parts to it. First we had to state our claim. Then we had to explain our reasoning as to why we made the claim. Lastly, we had to give evidence and use further knowledge on the subject to prove our claims. After the QOD, Mr. Rylander explained to us what a "stamped lab" is. He said that the lab we are currently working on will be a "stamped lab" and instead of him reading every one of our journals, we will be asked specific questions based on what we discovered in the lab. If we answer the questions correctly, he will stamp our labs and we will receive a 10/10 on the lab. If not, we will need to discuss further with our groups and have Mr. Rylander come back to our group. We then got into our lab groups and finished our lab from Friday (see October 2, 2009). If a group finished early they were able to start their conclusions. HOMEWORK - Finish both labs and get them stamped by Mr. Rylander by Wednesday. There is also a WebAssign due this Friday. Wednesday October 7, 2009
Today we didn't have a QOD. We focused on taking class notes and learning about free-body diagrams. Free body diagrams show the direction and strength of the different forces which act upon a mass. In these diagrams, the arrows represent the force and the dot represents the mass. When making these diagrams, Mr. Rylander told us to think of 2 questions: 1) Is there a planet nearby? (this reminds you to always draw a force of gravity). The force of gravity is always drawn straight down from the dot. 2) Is there anything touching the mass? In class we worked on a free-body diagram worksheet with our lab groups for more practice. We also learned how to calculate weight and we began talking about the difference between mass and weight. Tomorrow we will talk more about what mass really is, so we will then have a better understanding of the difference between mass and weight after class tomorrow. We did various examples about how weight is different on the Earth compared to on the moon in class today as well. A copy to the notes we took today is:

  • Finish the free-body diagram worksheet
  • Webassign due this Friday
  • Make sure to get your lab stamped by tomorrow morning by Mr. Rylander
  • Bring an empty bottle or jar to class Friday

October 12th, 2009

Today we started off with a QOD that asked us about to break off string in different ways. The model was a weight suspended in the air by string with another string hanging from the weight. We needed to find out how to just break the bottom string and than the top string without breaking both at the same time. As a class we figured out the best way to break the bottom string was just to pull down in a sharp short pull and to break the top string to angle the string out and do a strong long pull. After the QOD Mr. Rylander showed us a demo using a tennis ball on a string and swung it around. He asked us if he let go at a certin point where woud the ball head. The answer is that it would continue on its intended path becuase of the force already placed on it. After the demo we got a packet labled "Elevator Problems". These list of problems helped show us the diffrent steps used in showing how force affects objects. We did the first problem in class and the rest are for homework. Also dont froget that the accelerometer!!
